MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENTS TO "OVEN MITT" BURN INJURY PREVENTION:
The three major components of all thermal protective apparel, in their order of importance, are:
Liquid/Vapor Barrier, Insulation, and Outer Shell Fabric.
• An effective Liquid/Vapor Barrier is the most important component of burn injury prevention because the majority of foodservice industry burns are caused by hot liquids, grease or steam. Accordingly, an effective (defined as one which will withstand 500°F for 24 hours, without breaking down, melting or becoming brittle) Liquid/Vapor Barrier should withstand everyday use at normal kitchen temperatures for the life of the apparel.
• Insulation is the second most important component of burn injury prevention because burns caused by contact with hot surfaces are the next most common type of burns in foodservice. Insulation is the thick interior padding between the outer fabric shell and the interior liner (if there is one), which absorbs the heat before it passes through to the body. The insulation should be a sold fabric, so that it will withstand repeated use without hot spots (often caused by the bunching of quilted fabric insulation). Insulation thickness and/or fabric type determines the amount of time that a hot object can be held (while using the protective apparel) before feeling pain or receiving a burn. Apron and sleeve insulation varies based on their direct contact time with hot surfaces.
• The Outer Shell Fabric is the least important component of burn injury prevention because it is NOT a primary factor in preventing burns. The outer shell is not the component which will prevent burns from hot liquids, grease and steam. Nor will it prevent burns from heat penetration. If the Outer Shell fabric is Nomex or Kevlar, it can provide the heat and flame resistance of the apparel. The Outer Shell Fabric can be a determining factor of the longevity of the protective apparel, based on the durability of the fabric (determined by equipment, operational temperatures and operational abrasion of the fabric while in use).
Nomex
BurnGuard branded PPE offering constructed with a Nomex outer
shell is our top of the line product family with regard
to ultimate longevity and also boasts an NSF Approval. The Nomex
exterior is extremely durable and it is not uncommon for
it to have a life of 1-2 years in the heaviest foodservice operations.
These products offer the same level of burn protection
(VaporGuard) as the Poly-Cotton/QuicKlean products …. Longevity
is the key with Nomex. Unlike competitive products our
Nomex Protective Products can be machine washed and in fact requires
washing to remain clean and free of potentially harmful bacteria.
Poly-Cotton
BurnGuard branded PPE offering constructed with a Poly-Cotton
outer shell has historically been our best selling product
family and also boasts an NSF Approval. The Poly-Cotton
exterior is very durable and it is most likely to have
a life 9-18 months in the heaviest foodservice operations.
These products offer the same level of burn protection
(VaporGuard) as the (Nomex/QuicKlean) products and have
a lower price point than Nomex constructed products while
still providing a life expectance that is at least 10 time
longer than competitive quilted products. Unlike competitive
products our Poly-Cotton Protective Products can be machine
washed and in fact requires washing to remain clean and
free of potentially harmful bacteria.
QuicKlean
QuicKlean Products were designed and developed for users
who require the same level of protection they have enjoyed
with our BurnGuard branded (Poly-Cotton, Nomex and Kevlar)
offering such as; an effective liquid vapor barrier, thermal
protection, durability, dexterity, sanitation and comfort
but are without on-site laundry facilities. To clean, rinse/wipe
off the exterior, rinse the inside of the product and take
back to immediate use. Simply put, the QuicKlean process
makes cleanability ultra-easy. NSF Certified Liquid and Vapor
Barrier.
* {Note: QuicKlean is a process that is able to be applied
to our complete line of BurnGuard Products. BurnGuard is
the only PPE that boasts an NSF Certification for the foodservice Industry.}
Oil Filtration Kit
TSP offers four (4) Oil Filtration Kits that protect against
the hazards of fryer filtering/cleaning. We continue to
offer our #99900 & 99905 kits that are composed of
our machine washable poly-cotton BurnGuard products as
we as our new QuicKlean kits #99907 & 99908 for easy cleaning “wipe clean”. All continue to provide
maximum protection for this potentially hazardous activity.
Specialty BurnGuard Products containing Kevlar
TSP recognizes that there are certain applications in a commercial
kitchen that require the ability to withstand ultra high
heat (600-900F) while also providing maximum dexterity
and an effective liquid vapor barrier. For these specific
applications TSP offers our 3-finger Broiler Glove and
our “Plus” mitt. TSP uses a Kevlar base exterior
material in conjunction with Nomex, Poly-Cotton, and QuicKlean
in order to provide an Effective product that provides
maximum protection for the wearer against liquid, grease,
steam, heat, all the while preserving dexterity so that
the task can be easily/safely accomplished. NSF Approved. Terry Cloth Hot Pads
For those customers on a limited budget who are not looking
for the overall best value but rather “price” TSP
offers Terry Cloth hot pads. However, unlike any competitors’ products
our Terry provides an effective liquid vapor barrier due
to the fact that is made with the same VaporGuard as the
rest of our product line. These hot pads provide unequalled
protection and a very low price point.
